Ok, I don’t get political here, because I’m a moderate and generally tend to piss off people on both sides. I prefer to talk politics over a beer, not over the Internet. But watching the coverage of Boston compared with the coverage of Waco, CISPA, and other important stories this week, I can’t say nothing. So I’m gonna do a little mini-rant here.
I don’t believe the bombings in Boston or similar activities should be called “acts of terror.” I just call them “mass murder.”
Calling these cowardly acts “terrorism” gives legitimacy to their supposed “cause,” when the reasons for their crimes are no more valid rationally or theologically than the insane ramblings of Chris Dorner, Ted Bundy, or Jim Jones.
Calling it “terrorism” also tends to deactivate the collective rational brain of the public. We’ll give up any right, pay any expense, herd ourselves through any screening contraption, or elect any asshole if they tell us that doing so will make us “safer” from terrorism.
This, of course, is the entire point of terrorism — make a free people cower in fear and give up their freedoms, all to save them from something that, statistically, is 8 times LESS likely to kill them than being killed by lightning.
So it really pisses me off when the media (on both sides) throws around the word “terror” any time some asshole starts killing people, and then criticizes government officials for not jumping on the terror bandwagon so they can scare their audience into staying tuned for “updates” through a few more commercial breaks.
I’m not going to play the game. It’s not terror, it’s just senseless murder. I refuse to be terrorized.
